Categories: ,

Kaba Nurani, World Earth day was a day of celebration at Padang’s sekolahHalam. The atmosphere was upbeat and excited in the early part of Sunday morning. The school grounds were spotless and there was an air of anticipation. The students’ artworks, many of which were made from recycled materials, were on display around the school grounds and there were a number of stalls selling a variety of foods. Nurani Perempuan had been asked to participate in the celebrations and as well as a stall selling pens, stickers and books, the volunteers had created photo booths, some with an environmental theme for the students to take some crazy photos.

The event everyone was waiting for, was the arrival of the 21 female cyclists (21 srikandi) who had begun their journey in Aceh and were visiting 21 cities on their journey to Padang, arriving on April 21, Earth Day. The students from SekolahHallam had prepared traditional dances and dramas and songs, which they presented to the group of female riders and then there was a formal presentation of plaques which the students had made, to each of the riders. Later in the day volunteers from Nurani Perempuan, Putri and Fadlih facilitated a discussion on environmental issues before students presented some more songs and item to conclude the day. (..)
